How to Cleanse Crystals

Posted by Heather Burket on

Yeah! A new year – finally! I don’t think we, as a collective, have ever been so happy to see a year in the rear-view mirror as we have for 2020! I know it’s been a tough year for so many people, myself included. It’s been challenging on so many levels. I do sincerely wish everyone peace, joy, and love for the upcoming year!

Like everyone else, I too, had to adjust to the new “normal”, but I am ready to kick this year off with a positive attitude and go full steam ahead with life. I know everyone has different views on things, but I plan on living my life to the fullest in this next year – traveling, enjoying my hobbies and spending time with family and friends. I turned the big 50 last year, and I did not celebrate with a bang as I hoped. Rather than make such a big deal on the specific day, I spent some time reflecting on the last 50 years and what I hope to do in the next 50! Part of that includes celebrating my life for a FULL YEAR! That’s right. I know there were a lot of people that also had major milestones in the past year that were either missed, partially celebrated, or postponed altogether. I think the ones that I have the most sympathy for, are those high schoolers who didn’t get to go through their high school graduation. High school graduation is such a big event. You spend your entire life up to that point with your friends and family and it is definitely an end of an era. I truly feel for those that didn’t get to celebrate the way that they deserved.

So, to kick off the blog this year, I thought a great topic to cover would be “How to cleanse crystals.” Not only can we personally start the year off fresh, but why not also learn about how to cleanse your crystals so that they can have that fresh start this year too?

Before we get into the ‘hows’, let’s talk about why we even need to cleanse crystals. Everyone has their own personal connection to crystals. Some will just view them as inanimate rocks that are nice to display and that’s about it. Some people have stronger connections to crystals and understand that they have much more to offer. I have had some rather unusual experiences with crystals over the past few years – which I’ve shared a few of those in past blogs, so I tend to fall into the latter category. You can read more about those here:

Like us, crystals can absorb energy, and can use a good cleansing every once in awhile to help clear their energy so that they become better conduits of energy – to assist you and the environment in which they are placed.

However, as you would expect, this isn’t always black and white, and so we need to look at a few things first. Some crystals don’t need to have their energy cleansed at all, while some need to have theirs cleansed more frequently. And as with most things, this is my perspective, others will have different perspectives, just follow your own guidance.

Crystals that DO NOT need cleansing:

  • Black kyanite
  • Black tourmaline
  • Selenite

Why do these crystals not need cleansing? Black kyanite and black tourmaline are on the opposite end of the energetic spectrum from selenite. The former are grounding, root chakra crystals, while selenite is a crown chakra, high vibrating crystal. These crystals do share one thing in common and that is that they readily absorb negative energy, and transmute energy. They do not retain that energy. I personally have been working with some of the same black tourmaline for years and never have felt that it has become less effective in any way.

Available Black tourmaline and Selenite products are linked at the end of this article.

Crystals that need cleansing more often:

From my perspective, these would be the calcites – orange, green and blue are the more common varieties that people use. Calcites absorb energy very easily and so should be cleansed on a more frequent basis. Additionally, I would recommend any crystal that is used more frequently to make sure to cleanse to keep it effective.

How do you go about cleansing crystals?

There are a few different methods to cleanse crystals which I’ll cover in this article.

 Water

You can run water over a crystal while sending the energetic intention that any negative energies are being released from the crystal to give it a clean slate. However, there are a few things that you need to know. If you are going to use tap water, you may want to filter it first, because the mineral content and chlorine in the water, could damage the crystal or leave mineral deposits – especially if you let it sit in the water. Also, not all crystals are safe for cleansing in water. Please do research on your specific crystals prior to using water.

Sage

Sage is by far, my personal best choice for cleansing crystals. Sage is WONDERFUL for clearing energy. Once a week, usually on Sundays, I smudge my entire home with sage to clear the energy of my home, during this time, I incorporate giving my crystals a quick smudge. As I go through my home, I run the smoking sage bundle underneath my collection of crystals – from my amethyst pieces scattered throughout my home, my jewelry, and other pieces I have displayed throughout my house.

Chimes/bells

Sound can be used to clear any stagnant energy on the crystal as well. I actually have a small chime that I keep hanging, so I can just give that one a quick nudge to give my crystals a quick little cleansing. I actually like this method as well. I feel like it perks up the vibe in the area of the home as well.

Moonbath

If you really want to treat your crystals to a magical cleanse, let them sit under the moonlight on a full moon! I feel like when I set my outside altogether – it’s like a little crystal party out there! I do have a fear that some possum or raccoon is going to make off with one of them, but so far, so good….. I have a large woven basket, and I place my smaller crystals in there to transport them to their moonbath party. With my larger pieces, I just carry them outside and set them on the deck for party time! Do take care not to leave them outside in the sun once the sun comes up. If you are a late sleeper, you may want to make sure to set your alarm to get them so that they do not get exposed to the full sun! Most crystals will fade in the sun and some could spark a fire if left in the direct sun.

If you don’t have access to an outdoors space, another option is to place them on a windowsill inside to let them take advantage of the moon rays. But again, make sure to move them out of the sun in the morning!

The beginning of a new year is always a good time to take stock in life, to reflect upon the past year and think about what you want to create in the next year. While last year was definitely challenging, I think most of us could benefit from energetic clearings from time to time to keep our energies up. Remember that crystals are tools that are here to help us on our journey and could also benefit from some energetic cleansing as well. Happy New Year – may 2021 bring you joy, peace, success and health and well-being on all levels!

In love, light and gratitude,

 Heather
